Traditional Salt Mining

Come and experience the living tradition of salt making in Les Village — where nature, culture, and community come together.

On the northern coast of Bali, Les Village has preserved a centuries-old tradition of making sea salt naturally — using only sunlight, wind, and skilled hands. The salt crystals produced are more than just a kitchen seasoning; they are a cultural heritage and a vital source of livelihood for the local community.

The process is entirely manual and eco-friendly. It begins by preparing plots of soil, watering them with seawater, then softening the surface using a wooden tool called bangkrak. The brine is then filtered through tinjung bamboo and left to evaporate for three days until crystals form. Once harvested and drained, the result is pure, mineral-rich salt, naturally containing magnesium, calcium, and potassium.

Visitors who come to Les can walk across the salt fields, try the traditional process themselves, taste the salt’s natural purity, and interact directly with the salt farmers. More than enhancing the flavor of food, Les salt also offers health benefits such as detox baths, muscle relaxation, and natural healing.

By purchasing Les salt, you bring home the pure taste of Bali’s sea while helping preserve cultural heritage, support the local economy, and protect the environment that sustains the community.
